Quick Mix: DJ Miss Milan

Rapid-fire questions for quick-thinking DJs.

“Quick mixing” is a DJ technique where you play multiple tracks for short bursts before moving on to the next record. It’s all about building energy, getting the crowd hyped and creating seamless bridges between songs while keeping a musical narrative alive. In our Quick Mix series, we borrow that concept, going deep with DJs through rapid-fire questions. We pick their brains for expertise and fun facts, and move quickly from insight to insight. Same energy, different format.

DJ Miss Milan, aka the Fairy Vibe Mother, is known for her immaculate music taste and party-rocking abilities. She’s also the unstoppable tag team partner in Doechii’s live shows, and one of the most talked about DJs in the game right now. A rising force, and the subject of our very first Quick Mix.

A useful piece of advice for DJs that get on the mic is …

Don’t overtalk the track. Please. We need you to talk in between it. It sounds crazy when people are like [makes unintelligible noises]. It’s like congestion, you know? You gotta talk in between the pocket. Find the pocket of the song and talk in that pocket.

My all-time favorite piece of equipment is …

I’m gonna say my laptop. My laptop.

A classic song that never leaves my sets …

Um, “Return of the Mack.” I’m always gonna play “Return of the Mack.” You’re always gonna hear it. It’s a classic, it feels good, people know it, and if I could add a bonus one: “Blow the Whistle” by Too Short. Because that is a legendary song. It doesn’t matter where I go. I could be in New Zealand, where Serato headquarters is at, or I could be right here in the backyards of America — everyone knows Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle.” So those are my two go-to songs.

The most expensive record you ever bought is …

OK, so my grandmother, she gifted me her vinyl collection. I wouldn’t say I bought it, but I have it, and I know it’s a collector’s item currently now, but it is a Michael Jackson, I believe Thriller vinyl that she had, that she purchased from meeting Michael Jackson. I don’t have the vinyl jacket for it unfortunately, but I still have the vinyl that she got when she met him. It’s right there on my mantel. Money can’t buy that. Let’s say that.

The most unusual, or essential, or unexpected thing on your rider …

Albanese gummy bears. I need something sweet and savory sometimes, and when I’m having a good time, I like to pop a little gummy bear. I love gummy bears. Besides the technical stuff, that’s on my rider. I need my gummy bears, sorry.

What was it that almost made you quit DJing?

Honestly, nothing. Nothing made me ever want to quit. Whatever it was, made me want to go harder, to be honest.

This is my favorite traveling hack …

I don’t even know if it’s really a hack or not, but I feel like you have to have what I call the Thanos of airport travel. You should have TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, you should have it all, because it is so much smoother, especially internationally. Imagine having to wait two hours for Immigration when you could just go to Global Entry fast track. It’s the best thing. So my hack is to make sure you have all of the things you need to travel, and stay hydrated. If anything, always have a little pack of hydration, or an Emergen-C. Something. Stay hydrated, and have your Thanos of airport security credentials.
